Over the last couple of weeks, all 50 states in America and over 18 countries worldwide have participated in #BlackLivesMatter protests. We made history. It is the largest civil rights movement to date. We have shown that there's power in numbers.
We are outraged.
We are frustrated.
We’ve had enough.
Our collective activism has and will continue to look different on different people. Some people are protesting in the streets. Some are advocating for change on social media. Others are organizing, donating and educating. Unfortunately for many of us, we’re acting as the lone or minority voice at our workplaces fighting for change. Activism looks different in 2020.
As a black-owned business, we’re excited to see how our community is rallying together to effect change and to support black businesses. We all have a role to play. As a community, black people in the UK form 3% of the population yet we do 95% of our spending outside our community (Black Business Champions). There’s power in numbers.**
To show solidarity with the movement, we're releasing a limited edition shirt that honours the black lives in the UK who have been unjustly failed by the system. We have produced 50 shirts in this limited edition collection this month. 100% of those sales of will be split between four community organizations working to fight systemic racial discrimination and honour the lives of the deceased this month.
The money will be divided between these four community groups:
Black Lives Matter UK: BLMUK is a coalition of black activists and organizers across the UK. The group has been organizing since 2016 for justice in our communities.
Memorial Family Fund: The National Memorial Family Fund is the first permanent national resource of its kind specifically for those that are affected by deaths in custody in the UK.
StopWatch: StopWatch leads a wide-ranging campaign against the disproportionate use of stop and search, the increasing use of exceptional stop and search powers, and the weakening of accountability mechanisms.
US Community Bail Funds: Through the community bail fund initiative, we are splitting a portion of SZND's donation into 70+ community bail funds, mutual aid funds, and racial justice organizers across the United States. Organizations include Black Lives Matter Global Network, National Bail Out: #FreeBlackMamas and NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Black is beautiful. Black is excellent. Black lives matter always.
** July 4 2020 Update: Due to popular demand, the shirt has been restocked and SZND will make an ongoing monthly donation of 30% of shirt sales to Black Lives Matter causes.
